V-Dem Democracy Report: Philippines, Japan, Thailand

In deliberative democracy, it is based on deliberating or the rule of majority.

Japan had a huge surge in this starting mid 1940’s and has been steady since mid 1950’s.

The Philippines dropped by the 1940’s but quickly recovered back. It then dropped once more during 1970 then hiked up by the 1980’s; and had a small drop again by early 2000’s but quickly recovered too.

Thailand remained steady then went up mid 1970 but quickly went back down. It steadily increased from late 1970 to late 1980 before dropping again by 1990. It surged again by early 1990’s and increased but crashed mid 2000’s then quickly recovering. It crashed again mid 2010.

Egalitarian democracy is characterized by the idea that all humans are equal in fundamental worth.

In the graph above, Japan suddenly increased around the 1950’s.

Philippines went up around the 1950’s then lowered around the 1970’s to the 1980's. It went back up around 1985 and is somewhat steady after.

Thailand started to steadily increase around the 1930’s but then dropped around 2010.

Electoral democracy is based on elections where one party becomes the government.

Japan surged around the 1950’s and is maintaining with little hiccups.

Philippines dropped by 1940’s then climbed up quite quickly. It crashed again in the 1970’s but surged once more mid 1980’s. It went low again in the middle of the 2000’s but managed to go back up. It went lower again in the late 2010.

Thailand went up by 1930 and maintained and hiked up for a moment in 1970 then went to its normal state. It steadily increased again from mid 1980 to early 1990. It crashed but recovered and went up. It crashed again in the 2000’s but recovered before crashing again in 2010.

Liberal democracy implies that power is not completely concentrated and emphasizes the separation of powers.

Japan’s liberal democracy suddenly surged around the 1950’s and is maintaining it with small ups and downs.

For the Philippines it went up around the late 1940’s and maintained for a while before dropping around 1970. It stayed relatively the same then hiked again by the late 1980’s. Its dropped a bit early 2000’s then went up again early 2010 but dropped again mid 2010’s.

Thailand stayed quite low then steadily went up in the 1980’s. It was at its highest during 2000 and 2010 but soon stooped low mid 2010.

Participatory democracy is about the participation of constituents in the operation of political systems.

Japan’s skyrocketed in 1940 then proceeded to surge again in the 1950’s and is now pretty stable.

Philippines had dropped at around the 1940’s then surged around the late 1940’s. It remained quite steady then faced another drop around the 1970’s and went back up by late 1980’s. It still goes up and down but there are no sudden drops or highs.

Thailand is still low but hiked up around the 2000’s then dropped by 2010.

What is the future of democracy in Asia?

As seen in the graphs, the future is still quite uncertain. Japan is doing amazing while Philippines and Thailand are still struggling a bit. But Philippines and Thailand recover time and time again and will probably continue to do so.
